The "saddle." Near the right side of the picture is where the larger pieces of wreckage landed, and where Montgomery, Sallis, and LaDuke set up their makeshift shelter. During the summer of 1954 the larger pieces were blown up, and many were covered with stones to prevent them being seen from the air and mistaken for a downed aircraft. To give perspective, one of our group is standing in the saddle left of center, and two more can be seen at the center.

We walked to the east side of the ridge near where Fox, Olson, and Pratt landed in their parachutes.

Perhaps the rock where Fox, Olson, and Pratt spent the night.

When it was time to go, Jon and I decided to walk back. Ranger Ryan would lead. The three of us watched the others board the helicopter.

We start the trek toward the trail that will lead us back to the Chilitna Valley.

This photograph is taken from the same place that I took photos in 1955 and 1998. It shows the Susitna Valley near Gold Creek. The cover of the book was produced using this photograph as a model.
